Stanton Drew Circles and Cove

STANTON DREW CIRCLES AND COVE

9 miles from Churchill Parish

Although this is the third largest complex of prehistoric standing stones in England, the three circles and three-stone ‘cove’ of Stanton Drew in Somerset are surprisingly little known. The Great Circle, 113 metres in diameter, is one of the largest stone circles in the country and has 26 surviving upright stones. Yet recent surveys have revealed that the circles and cove were just part of a much more elaborate and important ritual site than had previously been imagined.

We embrace traditional Anglican Worship; families with young children are welcome to attend all services and especially the monthly Family Service.  We have a RSCM (Royal School of Church Music) affiliated Choir which welcomes singers of all ages including children. The choir, accompanied by the organ, sing at every service (except the 8am Communion).

Our Bell ringers meet at 8pm on Fridays to practice and ring at all services except the 8am Communion.

We also visit the local residential care home and individual’s homes to provide communion to those who are unable to attend Church services.

St Mary's is a small and friendly Church with a mixed congregation of all ages.

We have a lay worship team who are responsible for leading some of the services. Music is a mix of modern songs and traditional hymns led by our music group.

We welcome all ages and have 4 contemporary style All Age Services each month two of which are communion services following Common Worship. These services are lively affairs with drama, music, quizzes and other activities following the theme of the service. Children of all ages are welcome and are encouraged to participate (as are all the adults!). We also hold one said Holy Communion Service (1662).

We are very active within the village and host most of the Christian children's work for the local villages in our building.  We are a sociable bunch and enjoy various events (most of which involve eating!). We raise a lot of money for a variety of charities including Macmillan, Tearfund and local charities that help the disadvantaged. We have an active link to Bochoroke Village in Kenya and are raising funds to help them build a school and other facilities.
